For this purpose, you will need to make sure that you have all of the items which you can use during the emergency days in which the access to basic necessities is seized. Those necessities include the following.

Water:

A major storm can be quite damaging. It can disrupt your access to major necessities which also include water. At the very least, the water running out of the taps might get contaminated and, hence, unsafe for drinking. Therefore, you are going to have to make sure that you have stored water for 3 to 21 days. Another viable option is to invest in water purification system if you are sure that you are going to get water from the supply.

Food:

When you are forced to live indoors due to hurricane in the area, you cannot expect to be able to go for shopping of the foods that you need on daily basis. This is the reason that stocking up foods for emergency situation is quite necessary. For this purpose, you can keep a stock of non-perishable foods. You can even keep the perishable foods but make sure that those are kept frozen.

Light:

In case of an emergency, the best lighting arrangement to have is the lantern. Using lanterns, you can do your necessary tasks at home quite nicely. Flashlights are also important but they cannot be used as major lighting arrangement.

Warmth:
In case of an emergency, power outage can be a normal outcome. In such scenario, you are going to have to make sure that you have a plan to stay warm. A portable kerosene heater is the best item to keep the indoors warm. Moreover, you will need warm clothes to deal with the chilled weather.

Hygiene:

Hurricanes can cause major disruption of gas and electricity supply. Even the power grids in the areas can fail. With no power to run the waste treatment plants, it becomes impossible to remove water waste from the neighborhoods. In such scenarios, main tasks such as washing dishes, laundry and even taking shower can cause clogged drains and even flooding in your home. Make sure that you have a waste management plan in place. The dishes to be used for meals should be disposable. And to keep your hands clean, use baby wipes.

First aid:
The emergency survival kit needs to have a supply of vitamins, over-the-counter pills, and prescription medications for a full week. Make sure that you have a list of those medications with directions about how to use them. All of the medications need to be stored in waterproof containers. Other items in the first aid include emergency blankets, pain relievers, tourniquet, mosquito repellent, and blood stop bandages.

Communication:
If voice network in your area is working, fair enough. But if it is not working, you need to have a proper plan in place to inform your close ones about the emergency situation. Devise a strategy to prompt your close ones calling emergency services if they do not hear from you. Also keep a storm whistle to get attention of the emergency workers. Make sure that your cell phones are properly charged. Keep a radio to stay informed about the emergency situation.

Financial:
In case you have to leave the area immediately, you are going to load emergency supplies for you and your family in the car and head towards the safer location. In such scenario, leaving the hard cash behind is one of the most common mistakes. Although you might have your credit card with you, you are going to have to make sure that you have enough cash to rent a room, fill up the gas in your car, and feed your family for several days.
